Golubac Fortress, the Iron Gates and Lepenski Vir
The Danube at its most dramatic. A fairy tale fortress at the entrance to the gorge, cliffs rising straight from the river and a settlement where people lived more than 8,000 years ago.
East of Belgrade the Danube narrows and cuts through the Carpathians, forming the Iron Gates, the longest river gorge in Europe and the heart of Đerdap National Park. At its entrance stands Golubac, a medieval fortress whose towers climb the rock above the water.
Deeper in the gorge lies Lepenski Vir, one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe, with its unique fish shaped sculptures. On the way we stop at the walls of Smederevo, the last capital of medieval Serbia.
