Topola, Oplenac and the wines of Šumadija
The cradle of modern Serbia, a church covered in mosaics where the royal family rests, and the vineyards of Šumadija. A shorter day trip, perfect for history and wine lovers.
In 1804 the First Serbian Uprising began in the village of Orašac, led by Karađorđe, founder of the Karađorđević dynasty. His town of Topola grew into the dynasty's seat, and on the nearby hill of Oplenac King Peter I built the white marble Church of St George, the family mausoleum.
The interior is covered with mosaics depicting Serbian medieval frescoes. We end the day in a local winery, where Šumadija is proud of its reds.
