Orthodox pilgrimages in Serbia

Serbia has hundreds of monasteries, many of them still alive with monastic life. We guide individual pilgrims, parishes and groups to the most important shrines, in Greek and English, with respect for the liturgical calendar.

Route overview, distances from the starting point

From the modern St Sava Temple in Belgrade to the 12th century Studenica, the mother of Serbian monasteries, the Orthodox heritage of Serbia spans almost a thousand years. Fruška Gora, the Serbian Holy Mountain, alone has sixteen monasteries within an hour of Belgrade.

Aleksandra studied history in Corfu and guides Greek speaking pilgrims in their own language. We plan routes around services, feast days and the opening times of each monastery, and we can arrange meetings with the brotherhood or sisterhood where possible.

Suggested programmes: one day in Fruška Gora (Krušedol, Hopovo, Vrdnik), one day in the Morava valley (Ravanica, Manasija, Ljubostinja), or a three day route to Žiča and Studenica with an overnight stay.

How the day goes

  1. Belgrade: St Sava Temple and its crypt, the Cathedral Church and the Patriarchate, the Ružica and St Petka chapels at the fortress.
  2. Fruška Gora: Krušedol, Hopovo and Vrdnik monasteries, then Sremski Karlovci.
  3. Žiča, the coronation church of Serbian kings, and Studenica, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  4. Ljubostinja, Ravanica and Manasija in the Morava valley.
  5. Return to Belgrade, or continue to Lelić, resting place of St Nikolaj Velimirović.
