Most visitors stay in Serbia between two and three days, and many tell us at the end that they wish they had planned more. Belgrade is not a city of one big landmark, it is a city of atmosphere, viewpoints, food and stories. Here is our honest advice.
Belgrade in one day
With one day, focus on the historic core. Start at Belgrade Fortress in the morning, walk down Knez Mihailova to Republic Square, have lunch in the old town and visit St Sava Temple in the afternoon. In the evening, dinner with live music in Skadarlija. Our private city tour covers all of this in half a day, leaving the rest of the day free.
Belgrade in two days
The second day lets you slow down. Walk to Zemun along the Danube, climb the Gardoš tower, eat fresh fish on the river, and visit the House of Flowers and the Museum of Yugoslavia. In the evening try a river club or a quiet bar in Dorćol.
Three days or more: add day trips
On the third day, leave the city. Serbia is compact, and the best trips are one or two hours away:
- Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci and Fruška Gora for baroque towns, monasteries and wine
- Golubac and the Iron Gates for the Danube gorge and prehistory
- Eastern Serbia for a fortified monastery, a cave and a waterfall
- Topola and Oplenac for royal history and a shorter day
Our recommendation
| Days | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| 1 | Historic centre, fortress, St Sava, Skadarlija |
| 2 | Add Zemun, the Danube and Yugoslav history |
| 3 | Add one day trip outside Belgrade |
| 4 to 5 | Two day trips, or a night on Tara or in Novi Sad |
